April 20, 2000

Comilla, Apr 19 (UNB)- Unabated power disruption and low voltage the prevented the municipality from operating the water pumps to full capacity creating an acute scarcity of safe water to the town dwellers.

Unauthorised installation of motor to draw water from the WASA pipe lines has aggravated the situation in the town since the last few weeks.

The aggrieved people of Ashoktola and Bangichagaon area brought out procession last week demanding water. They kept the Ranirbazar water pump under lock and key.

Old Chowdhurypara, Racecourse, Police Line, Moghultoli, Kaptan Bazar, Ashoktola, Chhotora and Thakurpara have been worst affected.

Local people alleged that the poura authorities could not supply water one- fourth of the domestic requirements.

Poura Chairman Kamal Uddin Ahmed in a statement on April 10 expressed deep sorrow for the failure in supplying adequate water to the people but blamed pilferage by personal motors, low voltage and frequent power failure for the present crisis.

On the other hand frequent power failure has seriously hampered the boro cultivation in the district, as the irrigation pumps could not be operated smoothly.
